Imaginary Energy

My art explores the unseen energy connecting all things—vibrant, fluid, and alive. Through abstract forms and dynamic colours, I capture the essence of imagined forces, inviting viewers to feel the pulse of creativity and the harmony between the tangible and intangible worlds.

Horizontal Lines

These go back to some city paintings I made with lines. Horizontal lines appeared in the paintings. I am not sure where they came from. I call them ’fast lines’ as they were made quickly, or sometimes I referred to them as ‘scans ‘ as they scan the urban space.

There is a tension and speed in my lines and I think they resemble staves in music ready to compose on.

My process has been to depict a presence either of vertical lines or simplified cities. Then I work over the objects and erase them with horizontal lines and then cover with another object. This process is repeated until the layers all work together. I use a dark glaze which makes the underneath reappear. The presences in my paintings are suspended. I have removed gravity. The edges are unstable.

Musicians can play from my work and have performed improvising from my paintings. If anyone would like to do the same please mention it to me as I would like to explore this .

Take Five - Four Painters and a Potter

The show includes work by Harriet Brady who appeared on Portrait Artist of the Year and won the Judge's Prize at the prestigious 2024 Harley Open Art Competition. Her winning painting will be on show.

Glyn Williams: Harriet's father, is also showing work. He is a realist painter who enjoys capturing the effects of light and atmosphere.
Also exhibiting will be Phil Lockwood, whose quirky paintings of steampunk worlds have brought him international attention.

The show also includes Phil's wife: Ruth, who uses pastel to create paintings of land and seascapes. Taking inspiration from the local area and the coastlines of North Yorkshire and Cornwall.

And finally the fifth artist is Phil's niece Trudy. A ceramicist who makes remarkable pieces with an experimental flair.

Shine

This exhibition entitled Shine was inspired by a visit to the Millennium Gallery to see ‘John Hoyland - The last Paintings’. I loved the use John made of metallic emulsion to make his paintings come to ‘life’. As I couldn’t afford one of John’s paintings I decided to create my own in a similar style. After completing my first one I enjoyed it so much that I carried on creating, which resulted in this collection of works.

Hélène Fletcher

Artist’s Statement

The last ten years or so, suffering from ill health and work burnout, I stopped being able to listen to music. I also got very stuck in my painting practice.

I moved to Sheffield from Cornwall in 2022. Last summer, I suddenly reconnected with music, especially jazz. And with this reconnection, my painting energy came back, with the joy and excitement of being able to move again on canvas and otherwise.

This show is a celebration of my renewed relationship with jazz.
