Peter Bennion

I’m a photographer with two main themes: the search for water and enlightenment in India and Tibet.

In the semi desert Indian states of Rajasthan & Gujarat I photograph stepwells, subterranean architectural masterpieces built over the last thousand years in the search for water which, in the hot dry season, is deep underground.

In Tibet and in the far north of India, in the Union Territory of Ladakh which is located between Kashmir & Tibet, my photographs are of Buddhist monasteries, iconography, people & the landscape.

Although I’ve been travelling to India since the late seventies it was only in the last 20 years that I found particular subject materials that moved me to take a camera. I use digital format cameras to produce large scale images that give the experience of entering these sacred spaces.

You can see many of my photographs, some of which are collected into books, on my website silkroadgallery.co.uk
