Hélène Fletcher

I started to paint abstractly seriously at the beginning of the 21st century. I am 76 years old and more or less self taught. I use any acrylic paint available (Wilko had a beautiful black and chalky white!) but also enjoy making my own with pigments (natural or human made) and a binder. I sometimes like to use pastels (dry, oil, or wax) as well as ink in the mix.

For many years, I used photos or drawings to start the process, but more recently started to engage more physically and in the moment with what wants/needs to emerge, using jazz music and dance/movement as a catalyst. It is demanding work and does not always succeed. But it is very exciting, joyful and feels real.

I paint on canvas ( new and recycled ) and in the last few months I have discovered glorious Arches paper to paint on too.

I am so glad I discovered the Old Chapel Gallery where my paintings and myself feel welcomed and comfortable. It is my gallery from now on!
