Clare Hill

Having had a working life as a structural engineering technician I escaped the constraints of technical drawing and in later life became a semi abstract landscape painter working in mixed media. I create colourful , joyous personal artwork. I am inspired by nature and its raw beauty . I love experiencing the feeling of simply being alive in all elements whether sunny or stormy.

I believe art can recreate these experiences and can remind us of exactly how we felt at the time. It should stir our soul.

I work both intuitively, i.e with little or no plan, from my own reference photos. I use the photos to jolt my memory into recalling how I felt when I was actually there and that is what I want to impart to the viewer.

I use many layers of mixed media - I love using acrylic paint, oil pastels, crayons, pencils all on one surface. I use collage that is hand made by me or that I have collected that is pertinent to my subject and personal to me. Using this method means that my paintings 'talk' to me and lead me down unexpected paths.

Only when I love each part of the painting do I know it's finished. I live in Sheffield very close to the Peak District but also close enough to North Yorkshire to visit frequently. Both places are a wonderful source of inspiration . Cornwall too is a favourite haunt and provides a rather different aspect to my art .
