Anne Atkinson
I love to paint things that bring me joy – sometimes a still life, sometimes a landscape inspired by Scotland, Cornwall or the Peak District. At other times I paint purely abstractly, inspired by my love of colour and texture. In my landscapes I try to create paintings that describe a sense of place and the feelings that the places evoke in me. I work from both observation and memory. I work mainly in acrylic, but I also use charcoal, pencil, collage, ink and pastel. I work on several pieces at a time, moving from one to the other. I start with intuitive mark making and build up many layers of paint and scrape through, sand back and rework to reveal the history of the painting.
In contrast to my landscapes, I take inspiration for my still life paintings from the colour and shape of various vessels that I collect and the stories that they might evoke, as well as flowers and plants and domestic scenes.
I started painting about 15 years ago, attending weekly classes run by local Sheffield artists Lena Papapanagiotou and Gill Gathercole. I have also attended courses at the St Ives School of Painting and have participated in some on-line courses. Since I retired in 2017 I have spent much more time exploring and developing my painting process. I moved into my studio at the Chapel Gallery in September 2023.
